This sunrise followed a night of howling winds and pounding rain, our first night of a winter vacation in Xcaret, Cancun, Mexico. I was strongly tempted to sleep in, but as a hint of light began to develop in the eastern sky it seemed that the rain was diminishing, so I thought that after travelling all this distance I should at least get up and take my camera and umbrella and see what might happen to the light. Suddenly the rain stopped completely and I was rewarded with one of the most spectacular sunrise scenes I have ever seen with the ocean reflecting the multi-colored sky, and the low warm light creating a glow in the contrasting green vegetation. In my excitement I forgot to check the camera settings, and made a few worthless exposures before I settled down and regained control and made a careful image!
