Sea Stars have been declining on the Oregon Coast for the past several years. This year, at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, Oregon, they are much more abundant than in recent years. The biologists who come each day to the site to educate the public on intertidal biology say they are pleased to see the numbers increasing, but especially to see the increase in young starfish, which indicates some recovery of the species (note the young brown sea star above and to the left of the obvious orange one!). This may be one of the good news stories in modern ecology! Click on image to enlarge.
