Now that the cold days of the winter season are upon us, the overwintering herons can often be seen crouched down in postures to maximize their feather insulation and minimize heat loss. It’s also a nice way to show off your beautiful filoplumes, which are the decorative part of the breeding plumage. Standing in bright sun helps stay warm, and also provides pleasing color contrasts with the brown and green winter grasses. When looking at such a beautiful bird it is easy to see why the Great Blue Heron was chosen as the City Bird of Portland! Click on image to enlarge.
