In Portland, Oregon we are watching the wonderful transition from winter to the first blush of spring. The soft colors and delicate textures of the landscape at this time are a prelude to the exuberance and cacophony of mid-late spring and early summer. Nowhere is this transition more beautiful than in the deciduous forests of the eastern United States. This image comes from the western part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in eastern Tennessee where a small river, called Little River, runs parallel to one of the interior park roads. The atmosphere along this and the other park streams seems to glow with the pastel radiance of the awakening forest. Click on image to enlarge.
