The beautiful Roseate Spoonbills live along the gulf coasts of the Southern Unites States, including Texas, where this image was made.

My wife Rosalie was teaching at the Biennial Contemporary Handweavers of Texas conference in Houston, which brought us into this area. I encountered several flocks while exploring the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge south of Houston on the Texas gulf coast. Different birds have variable plumage, but all are pink, with the most dramatic birds showing bright yellow on the body just in front of the wing, and a yellow-orange tail, with deep magenta markings on the front of the wing. The least complex are a uniform shell pink all over. The flocks are dramatically beautiful to see, glowing pink in the soft steamy light against the blue and green of the marshlands they inhabit.
