The Painted Hills National Monument, located in the John Day Fossil Beds in North Central Oregon, is one of the many outstanding geologic displays in the state of Oregon. The ash and mud flows from surrounding volcanoes created not only the conditions for fossilization, but also reflect the prevailing temperatures, moisture, and oxygen content required to produce these multiple colors.
